Parenting Organizations and Resources
Parents and legal guardians are the most important people in a child's life. Every parent and legal guardian knows that parenting can be difficult at times, even more so when you have moved to a new country. There are many organizations and resources that may help parents and legal guardians and their children, here are some of them:
Family Resource Centres
There are a number of Family Resource Centres located across PEI that offer programs that promote the emotional, physical, intellectual and social well-being of children aged 0 - 6 and their families. Programs at these centres include parent education and support groups, parent resources, prenatal nutrition programs, drop-in play, toy-lending libraries and outreach for smaller Island communities.
PEI Home and School Federation
The PEI Home and School Federation is a volunteer organization where parents and teachers work together for the best possible education for all children in PEI. This organization is concerned with children, youth and their needs, at school and at home. Branches of this organization operate in individual schools, and all parents are encouraged to participate.
PEI Parents Network
The PEI Parents Network is a parent-driven support network whose goal is to find ways to minimize the isolation of parenting through activities and information sharing. Main activities include connecting Island parents to useful information, as well as to each other through a website, and planning ongoing community activities for parents. [See Related Resources]
Nobody's Perfect
Nobody's Perfect is a national program that provides parenting education and support to parents of children five years of age and under. It is designed to meet the needs of parents who are young, single, socially or geographically isolated or who have low income or limited formal education.
Parenting Resources Online
There are also a number of resources available on the Internet for parents and legal guardians. They cover various topics to promote the healthy development of children in Canada, from infancy to adolescence. Some of these resources are for all parents, and some are specific to parents who are also new immigrants in Canada.
